Flammable Refrigerants – Some Current Issues
The phase-down of HFC refrigerants is resulting in increased interest in the use of low GWP refrigerants. The improper use of flammable refrigerants creates risks of fire and explosion in homes, motor vehicles, commercial buildings, and other workplaces. The intention is to highlight and discuss some current issues.

Rod is a Hazardous Substances Technical Specialist with WorkSafe New Zealand, providing detailed information and support to a variety of stakeholders.
He has led or participated in a number of high-profile investigations into serious and fatal incidents involving hazardous substances. He supported the Department of Labour's investigation into the Icepak Coolstores explosion and fire in 2008 and has researched the safe use of flammable refrigerants since that time.
Responding to issues arising from the increasing availability and use of flammable refrigerants is a significant part of his current work.
