You know the adage, “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging”? It is apt in so many areas of business but is particularly relevant when it comes to WorkSafe notifications. Jim Roberts and Sam Houliston from Hesketh Henry will talk about the best practice approach a business or organisation should implement when there has been an incident or emergency, calling upon their practical experience from assisting clients in moments of crisis.

Sam Houlison

Sam Houliston Senior Associate Hesketh Henry

Sam Houliston is a Senior Associate in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Team and specialises in Employment Law. Sam was admitted to the Bar in February 2006. He graduated with conjoint degrees in Law and Employment Relations from the University of Auckland. Sam joined Hesketh Henry in September 2017, having previously worked for Auckland laws firms as an employment, civil and criminal litigator representing clients in the Employment Relations Authority, the Courts and other tribunals. He health and safety prosecutor for the Department of Labour (now the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment), and acted as an independent Accident Compensation adjudicator. Sam advises employers and employees on all issues arising from the employment relationship, with a particular focus on disciplinary matters, performance management, restructuring processes, and health and safety issues.


Jim Roberts

Jim Roberts Partner Hesketh Henry

Jim Roberts heads up the employment law team at Hesketh Henry. Jim has a wealth of specialist experience, having been practising employment law since 1992. He helps his clients, who are from a range of industries, develop their employment strategies around common employment processes, assists with compliance work to minimise his clients’ exposure to risk, with a particular focus on Holidays Act issues, and regularly advises on issues arising from mergers and acquisitions. Jim is a highly skilled and experienced advocate and has a wealth of experience in mediation, the Employment Relations Authority, Employment Court and appellate Courts. During his career, Jim has acted on a number of leading cases. Particular highlights are a Court of Appeal benchmark case on the application of short-term incentive payments under the Holidays Act and appearing in the Privy Council regarding employment jurisdiction. As well as providing strategic legal advice, Jim is often involved in union disputes and collective agreement issues, and is currently advising on one of the first fair pay agreement negotiations.
